Commonwealth Clean Oceans Plastics Clean-up in St Lucia

As part of the Commonwealth Clean Oceans Plastics Campaign, the Saint Lucia Chapter of the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN) teamed up with the Commonwealth Games Association, a proud member of Commonwealth Sport, to host a beach clean-up event at Fond'Or Beach in Dennery. This Commonwealth Clean Oceans Plastics clean-up was part of the national activities supporting The King's Baton Relay.

The event saw an incredible effort, with volunteers collecting 210 kg (462.97 lbs) of waste. A significant amount of recyclable plastic was also collected and taken to Plastic Solutions Inc. for repurposing, ensuring that the materials could be reused in an environmentally responsible way. This marks the second clean-up at this beach, with the first taking place in October 2024, and the coastline remains heavily littered with plastic waste, including bottles and debris.

CYEN continues to urge the public to dispose of their waste responsibly. Improper waste disposal poses serious threats to both marine and human life. We are all interconnected with our environment, and every action counts in the fight against plastic pollution.

The success of this event wouldn’t have been possible without the contributions of key partners and supporters. Special thanks to Paul Flavien for granting access to Fond'Or Beach, as well as the Commonwealth Games Association and its athletes. We also appreciate the support from DBS TV St. Lucia, Pertaniya Oculie, Youth Worker for Dennery-North, and Laurah John, CEO of Jua Kali Ltd., whose partnerships were instrumental in the success of this cleanup.

While this event was a step in the right direction, there’s still much more work to be done. Together, we can continue to make a difference and protect our beautiful environment for future generations.

Finally, the Saint Lucia Baton for the King's Baton Relay was beautifully designed and painted by Sakey Productions, adding a creative touch to this important campaign.
