The Garden Route National Park (GRNP) straddles the border between the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces, covering the coastal strip between the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma Mountains and the Indian Ocean, and can be described as a complex of protected areas managed as a single entity by the South African National Parks (SANParks).
The Garden Route indigenous forests cover about 60 500 ha and form the largest forest complex in South Africa. About 40 500 ha of these forests occur within the Garden Route National Park which was proclaimed on 6 March 2009. The Garden Route region attracts a large number of tourists, many of whom visit big tree viewpoints and other tourist facilities in the natural forest.
